Summertime News from Area Codes

AZDIAmbassadors

Phoenix, AZ – Few high school players have taken time in June to hit College Elite Camps, meaning schools of interest that put on a one day clinic. This camp is mainly on skill development and station work, drills and talking about fundamentals.

Several schools don’t have Elite camps due to the NCAA rules on putting one on. To name a few high school prospects that participated were.

Drew Bender, Pinnacle High School (Phoenix, AZ) 2013 – Has 9 offers already and has attended Elite Camps such as Colorado, Creighton, Drake, Stanford and Colorado State. Schools also in the mix that offered included Northern Arizona and Air Force. Oregon State has interest but no offer yet as Rice and Harvard are closing in and could offer soon the 6 foot 5 combo guard. Bender was invited to the Pangos All American Camp and performed well as the Top 120 prospects were present. Bender will suit up in the summer with Etop Udo Ema and the Compton Magic.

Rolando Rhymes, Desert Mountain High School (Scottsdale, AZ) 2014 – They call him “ROLO” as the 5 foot 10 point guard can get to the basket and displays quick passes in transition. Rhymes has a few schools of high interest and one being San Francisco. Rhymes had a solid performance at USF and could pick up an offer this summer from Head Coach Rex Walters. He will be on the club scene with the Arizona DI Ambassadors coached by John Ortega and company.

Trey Hoebee, Sunrise Mountain High School (Glendale, AZ) 2015 – Hoebee is a new name on the map. This 6 foot combo guard can really shoot the ball with good range and a nice first step. Hoebee defends the ball well and has good basketball IQ also is a floor general. Hoebee has great upside and is fundamentally sound with high academics. Hoebee attended the UC Irvine Elite Camp and had an outstanding performance.

In other news: Jared Cunningham who once was de-committed by Herb Sendek three days before the signing period for a player you remember in Demetrius Walker, was drafted last week with the 24th pick of the first round in the NBA DRAFT by the Dallas Mavericks. Phoenix native David Grace an assistant coach at Oregon State once recruited Cunningham while at the University of San Francisco rekindle their relationship at Oregon State University.

Reggie Theus the former NBA player and NBA coach of the Sacramento Kings is back coaching. Theus coached last month in the Pangos All-American Camp and now is coaching his son Reggie Theus Jr on Team LAX. Theus will very soon be a college head coach and has several contacts in the business. Theus is a strong supporter of Chad Groth and Area Codes Basketball.

Jeff Meadows the leader in high school grassroots basketball for www.hoopsreport.com is one of the hardest workers in the business. Earlier last month we ran a interview with Meadows.

Jeff Meadows toured The NIKE EYBL this Spring in Virginia, Minnesota & The Bay Area.

Team to watch: The Arizona DI Ambassadors are making a name. John Ortega is now coaching a team full of DI prospects such as Rolando Rhymes, Jaylen Jenkins the 6 foot 4 guard in 2015 and Isaac Allen the 6 foot 9 2014 forward, both play for Shane Burcar at Mesa High School.

David Grace – Asst. coach Oregon State University

Senior Prospect wire: A couple of names on the board include Eric Williams (Westview HS -Avondale, AZ) this 6 foot 1 point guard that is very quick and can knock down the mid-range jumper. Williams can really handle the ball and is a DI prospect and should go late. Next is Chris Thompson (Arcadia HS – Phoenix, AZ) the 6 foot 7 athletic forward who is solid in the post and long and wiry. Thompson is thin but makes up for it on defense as he displays shot blocking ability.

Don’t Mess with TEXAS: Area Codes Basketball wants to say CONGRATS to our good friend Tony Benford. Benford was named head basketball coach at The University of North Texas. Benford was at Arizona State, Nebraska and Marquette as an assistant coach. Well overdue for Benford and his family and he will do a great job at UNT.
