Las Vegas Basketball Talent shines in Chad Groth’s Easter Classic
The Area Codes Basketball Easter Classic by Chad Groth is getting recognized for its premier exposure of top talent. A few Vegas teams made their way out there including a Desert Reign 15U and DC Elite 15u,16u and 17u teams. The majority of the teams were from California, Arizona, New Mexico and Utah.
Some players that stood out from Vegas were these guys:
Deric Hammock, 6’3″ forward (Desert Reign) 2015 class – Hammock is strong power forward at just 6’3″ he plays much bigger with a strong base and good footwork. He rebounds against players much taller than him and has developed a great set of post moves. He has a good 15′ jump shot as well to go with good ball handling. Deric is a typical ball hawk. He just gets up and finds the ball and makes it his. He is a superb rebounder for his size.
Anthony Morales, 5’10″ guard (Desert Reign) 2015 class – Morales has solid handles and a confident jump shot front anywhere on the court. He was a consistent scorer when Desert Reign played up vs. 16u teams and he plays very smart across the board. Morales is a smart player and runs offensive plays flawlessly.
Kodi Leslie, 6’3″ Small Forward (Desert Reign) 2015 class – Leslie can drill it down from 3 point land and has a long frame that makes him difficult to guard. He averages 2 blocks per game. He needs to get in the weight room as it will help him play with bigger and stronger players. Leslie could be a future Joe Tuss that is graduating from Durango. Tuss is 6’7″ now and Kodi is 6’3″ as a Freshman as we speak.
Jaelin Jackson, 5’9″ Point guard (Desert Reign) 2015 class – Jaelin Jackson is a strong PG who who can handle the ball well in traffic and doesn’t get bothered by contact in the lane or by aggressive defense. He runs the team well and gets the rack when his team needs a bucket. Solid on the ball defender who forced many turnovers during the games on Saturday. He plays football and runs track as well so he is in premier shape to play basketball right now.
Tyler Bey, 6’5″ (Dogcatchers) 2016 – Harney MS – Tyler is a rare size from Middle school. He played well despite playing with kids a year older. Good potential for a futre big man in Vegas. He is good shot blocker but he is growing into his body right now and is predicted to be 6’10″ in a few years so watch out for this kid.
Darrion Danniels, 5’10 (Dogcatchers) 2015 Eldorado HS – Quick guard who can make moves on the fly. Great Court awareness when running the court in transition. The Dogcatchers are looking to him for leadership this Spring and Summer.
Tavion Jackson 6’3 (Dogcatchers) 2015 Valley HS – Tavion is a great rebounder and scorer using his size. He has a good IQ for the game. If his footspeed and hustle picks up than he could be very good.
16 and Under players included
Spencer Mathis 6’5 (Dogcatchers) 2014 Valley HS – Spencer is a beast on the boards and low the post. High motor and very athletic player who gets after it. We saw him in the showcase back in March and he is primed up for next season at Valley.
Jayveon Brown 6’2 (Dogcatchers) 2014 Eldorado HS – Great SG who can score with his athletisism.
17 and Under players included
Chris Swanson 5’10 (Dogcatchers) 2013 Valley HS – Chris is a leader plain and simple and he has excellent court vision running the break. Good jump shot and can change direction on a dime.
Jason Wallace 6’7 (Dogcatchers) 2013 Mojave HS – Jason was a big kid before but lost 30 pounds and now uses his good footwork to handle guys in the post. He has some potential to make a difference for Mojave next year now that he is a better player.
Caleb Carter 6’6 (Dogcatchers) 2012 Valley HS – Caleb is Solid forward who can grab boards and create his own shot from many different places on the court. Carter was a big factor for the Valley team that almost went to State last season. Excellent awareness when playing near the basket. Rebounds just come to him.
